Executive Director
Jenny Barker
As I finish my second year in this role, I’ve grown to appreciate the WISE part of our name because
it reflects how we work. WISE represents our innovation, insight, collaboration, and knowledge. It
represents our unique blend of expertise, data-driven solutions, and collaborative partnerships that
drive meaningful change in seafood markets.
In the last year, our team has expanded our business partnerships in quantity and quality. We have
grown the number of partners and the volumes of seafood we affect – and the depth and quality of
our work attributed to our supply chain due diligence approach. Our work is linked to nearly 5000
retail outlets and 450+ suppliers providing more than 28,500 metric tons of seafood.
Much of our expansion is due to the credibility of our work – referrals from existing partners – and
the reputation and responsiveness of our staff. Our business partners are pushing the envelope in
best practices - gathering important vessel-level data to address risks for illegal, unreported,
unregulated fishing, engaging with their supply chain partners on human rights due diligence, and
walking out transparency by sharing their procurement policies and expectations. Our governance
work continues to bring industry and government together for more aligned and effective
regulation in seafood. We share our expertise across several forums including the U.S. IUU-LR
Coalition, ISSF, GSSI, GDST, and others. Our WISE insights and collaboration have led to real-world
impact in sustainable market transformations and I am proud to shepherd this group of fun,
dedicated individuals! Special thanks to our Board of Directors who supports all of our efforts.
As we prepare for 2025 and beyond, FishWise will be proactive, adaptable, and remain mission-
driven. We know change is inevitable. For businesses, an increasingly uncertain political landscape
both domestically and abroad means that understanding supply chain risks will be more critical
than ever. We remain committed to helping stakeholders across the seafood sector adapt and
thrive. Together, we can navigate the challenges ahead and build healthier seafood markets.

Our Approach
We are working toward a future in which the seafood
industry, in collaboration with governments and civil
society, takes full accountability for the people and
the ocean resources upon which it depends.
We advocate for policy and legislation to institutionalize
transparent, traceable, and legal supply chains that
benefit the ecosystems and communities where seafood is
produced and processed.
We drive collaboration across key industry, NGO, and
government stakeholders to innovate and transform the
status quo.
We partner with companies to proactively address
environmental, human rights, illegal fishing, and
traceability risks across their supply base.

In 2024, we forged new business partnerships and expanded the depth
of our engagement with established partners to implement a
comprehensive supply chain due diligence approach. We also led
successful initiatives to strengthen our business partners’ traceability,
transparency, and verification capabilities and took a fresh look at how
best to support local and small-scale fisheries.
We also launched a new partnership with Texas-based H-E-B to align
their seafood program with the Seafood Supply Chain Due Diligence
framework. We look forward to working with H-E-B in 2025 as they
embark on new transparency efforts towards their strategic seafood
program goals.

We support effective Human
Rights Due Diligence (HRDD)
with meaningful worker
engagement
After two years of in-depth stakeholder engagement across
the seafood sector and other commodities, FishWise
published Human Rights Due Diligence: Fundamentals for
Impactful Implementation. Tailored to seafood companies’
needs and common challenges, this practical guidance
enables companies to embed worker rights into HRDD
practices and take action to support workers. Additional
resources are available on the Roadmap for Seafood Ethics
(RISE) platform, a free online resource for companies as
they implement HRDD in their seafood supply chains.
Developing Actionable
HRDD Guidance for
Companies to Enable
Worker-Led Efforts
Social Responsibility
In 2024, FishWise engaged directly with companies to
develop practical strategies and tackle real-world HRDD
challenges. As part of the Consortium of Social Risks in
Seafood, FishWise helped facilitate dialogue with 30
companies across two workshops to encourage
collaboration and secure the implementation of Social Risk
Assessments in high-risk geographies. Feedback from these
engagements enhanced the guidance and resources on
RISE and led to an increase in outreach. In 2024, RISE
reached over 6596 visitors from 127 countries.
Engaging Industry on
HRDD Solutions
Social Responsibility
Through solution-oriented dialogues such as NOAA’s
Collaborative Accelerator for Lawful Maritime Conditions
in Seafood (CALM-Cs), a workshop and panel at Seafood
Expo North America 2024, and an interactive webinar for
seafood companies, FishWise convened 165
representatives from industry, advocacy, government, civil
society, and workers. These conversations advanced the
sector’s understanding of how companies can most
effectively implement HRDD and the importance of their
role in enabling worker-led efforts.
Bridging Perspectives
Between Stakeholders
Social Responsibility
We are committed to bringing
diverse voices to the table and
finding common ground.
In 2024, FishWise and the Stimson Center co-designed and
hosted two in-person workshops and one webinar to
“Reimagine the Seafood Import Monitoring Program
(SIMP).” Gathering over 300 stakeholders representing 19
U.S. agencies and 30 seafood businesses, FishWise
facilitated constructive and honest conversations about
opportunities to improve the effectiveness of SIMP, to
explore blue-sky thinking about what a successful import
control program could look like, and how to operationalize
an improved and expanded SIMP. These conversations
were critical in influencing NOAA’s Action Plan to Improve
SIMP and fostering greater trust and collaboration
amongst diverse stakeholders.
Influencing Import
Regulations
Governance Reform

Working with FishWise on the Re-imagining SIMP roundtables was a
highly positive experience. The FishWise team is an incredibly smart and
effective group of professionals who provided invaluable guidance,
facilitation, and structure for the workshops. Their efforts were crucial to
the progress NOAA made in evaluating options and charting the future
course for the Seafood Import Monitoring Program. The education and
connections fostered during the workshops have created a much stronger
foundation for combating IUU fishing. I am grateful for their contributions
and dedication to working with NOAA and other government agencies in
the joint effort to support responsible fisheries globally. We need FishWise
at the table bringing people together around stronger, more effective
policies to manage fisheries and protect the health of our oceans.
Janet Coit, Assistant Administrator for NOAA Fisheries
“
This past year, FishWise, our collaborations, and our
business partners supported 20 unique calls for action
ranging from strengthening market states' coordination to
combat IUU fishing, supporting domestic traceability and
data collection requirements, implementing national
security measures, and adopting electronic monitoring
standards in tuna fisheries. FishWise continues to play a
pivotal role in driving collaboration and catalyzing private-
sector advocacy.
Advancing Global
Advocacy
Governance Reform
In 2024, FishWise doubled down in our advisory roles,
sharing our business acumen and expertise in supply chain
traceability and social responsibility across global
collaborations including the Coalition for Fisheries
Transparency, the IUU Fishing Action Alliance, the U.S. IUU
Fishing and Labor Rights Coalition, the NGO Tuna Forum,
and the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability. Across
these forums, we seek to drive alignment and bring
advocacy opportunities to our business partners.

Networks
We prioritize transparency to
combat illegal, unreported, and
unregulated (IUU) fishing
Seafood Transparency
Leveraging our trusted relationships with the seafood
industry, FishWise continued to foster private-sector
leadership for transparency in 2024 by:
- Publishing case studies on business efforts in
transparency - Supporting our partner, Culimer, as they publicly
shared their efforts to advocate for governments to
share vessel-level data in a multi-stakeholder panel at
the 2024 Seafood Expo North America - Continuing to prove the feasibility of collecting and
publicly disclosing names of fishing vessels associated
with a retailer’s (Hy-Vee) tuna supply chains

Champions for
Transparency
Seafood Transparency
In May 2024, FishWise launched our Vessel Risk
Dashboards. This innovative service leverages multiple
datasets and satellite tracking technologies to provide
advanced analytics on vessel-level risks for IUU fishing and
forced labor. With this information, companies gain
unprecedented insights into higher-risk supply chains and
are better equipped to turn data into action as they
implement their due diligence plans.
Transforming Data

Business Intelligence
Seafood Transparency
We foster alignment and collective action
In March, 2024, FishWise held its second Retailer Forum, a
meeting that convenes North American retailers to learn,
collaborate, and align on seafood sustainability priorities.
In 2024, the retailers focused on actioning priorities, which
included seeking additional industry support and
alignment for traceability measures. In Fall, 2024, FishWise
presented the forum’s priorities to the Food Industry
Associations’ Seafood Strategy Committee. As a result,
FishWise is finalizing a basic list of key data elements for
seafood products that align with GDST standards.
